Homemade Versus Brand Name Energy Drinks

Why make homemade energy drinks when you can easily buy them? While convenience is always great, there’s a price for it and it comes in the forms of sugar, artificial flavors, chemicals, food coloring, and preservatives. Most energy drinks from the supermarket contain at least two, while some even contain all five. Although honey and maple syrup both contain sugar, many store-bought energy drinks use (a LOT of) processed white sugar. If you can make it at home, chances are it’ll be the healthier option.

Popular Ingredients in Homemade Energy Drinks

Although some energy drinks aren’t spiked with crazy levels of caffeine, there are a lot of natural sources of energy that won’t cause your blood sugar to go through the roof. As you’ll notice with some of the recipes, there are a lot of common household ingredients that they all share. In particular, citrus and salt are at the top because they contain electrolytes, which are important for hydration and energy.

Citrus

Arguably the most popular ingredient in homemade energy drinks, simply due to their versatility. Citrus fruits like lemon, lime, and oranges, are rich in electrolytes, vitamins, and antioxidants. They help retain hydration, which is especially important during any kind of exercise.

Himalayan Salt

Salt seems like a cut and dry ingredient, but the type of salt does matter. Himalayan salt in particular is rich in sodium, but it also contains calcium and potassium that table salt doesn’t. That means Himalayan salt has three electrolytes instead of one, which will give your energy drink the boost it needs.

Coconut Water

Coconut water on its own is a natural energy drink, chock full of minrals that can be beneficial to drink daily. It may have a unique taste that takes some getting used to, but it’s worth trying to add into your diet.

Banana

Bananas are potassium powerhouses, containing over 400mg of potassium per banana. Some energy drinks are simply protein shakes with electrolytes, which is sometimes all you need for a quick energy boost.

Raw Honey

100% pure, (RAW HONEY) is a natural sweetener that can add a touch of sweetness to your energy drinks. It’s rich in antioxidants and can help fight seasonal allergies, especially if it’s local honey. Since most of these recipes call for raw honey, it’s best to have a jar on hand as much as possible.

What Makes a Healthy Energy Drink?

Energy drinks are typically caffeinated (or high sugar) drinks that are commercially sold and marketed towards providing you with several hours worth of energy.

The unfortunate truth is many of these commercial energy drink brands are not really good for you thanks to their excessive caffeine and sugar contents.

With that being said, it’s possible to make your own homemade energy drinks that actually work while also being really good for you. This recipe is a great example of that! There’s a reason why it’s my staple energy drink.

Healthy Homemade Energy Drink

3 Reasons Why This Homemade Energy Drink is Healthier than Commercial Counterparts

Here are 3 of the top reasons why this homemade energy drink is way better for your health compared to store bought brands:

  • Caffeine-free. While there’s nothing wrong with the occasional cup of coffee or caffeine in general in moderation, there’s still definitely something to be said for enjoying an all-natural energy boost provided by real fruit and whole food ingredients.
  • Natural sugar content. This energy drink may not be 100% sugar-free but the good news is that it’s all-natural forms of sugar. There’s nothing refined here! Raw honey may contain sugar but it also contains an abundance of antioxidant compounds while fresh orange juice is rich in vitamin C to go along with its fructose content.
  • Lower calories. The high sugar content in many commercial energy drink brands also brings with it an increased calorie count. By making your energy drinks with healthy ingredients like the ones used in this recipe, you’ll be able to give yourself a boost of energy while also keeping the calorie count to a minimum.

Can I Drink Energy Drinks Everyday?

I wouldn’t recommend drinking commercial brand energy drinks on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t recommend drinking them period.

However, when it comes to healthy homemade energy drinks like this fruit punch, you can absolutely enjoy it each and every day. That’s right!

I actually like to whip up a big batch all at once and keep it in the fridge (you can safely keep it in there for 3-4 days) to save on time.

4. Snappy Living – Coconut Cranberry Water

However you make it, it’s sweet, it tastes heavenly, and there’s a restorative property to it. I feel like it’s replenishing me as I drink it.

You’ll need some coconut water or coconut juice. You can use any brand you like, and yes, you can use coconut water or “juice” with pulp.

Overhead view of Cranberry Coconut Water on table

Coconut water and coconut juice are really the same thing, but marketers have started calling it all “coconut water” and claiming it’s got some massive health benefits because that’s how they roll.

Most of those health claims are really overblown, but it is actually a  and stuff in it. It’s not exactly an electrolyte replacer, but it does replace some of what you lose after a hard workout. And because it’s so much lower in sugar than most electrolyte replacers, you can actually use it in their place.

And the newer “pressed” coconut water is even closer to the juice form, which can be kind of thick and rich and delicious. That’s what I link to in the recipe and recommend.

Cranberry juice usually has sugar, artificial sweeteners, or other natural fruit juices added to it. That’s because cranberry juice alone is extremely tart. Almost undrinkable. 5 homemade energy drinks

If you want a low sugar alternative that doesn’t use sugar or artificial sweeteners, there are plenty of low sugar and “diet” cranberry juices available. best-homemade-drinks-for-weight-loss-fast You can definitely use those in this drink, as well as the THE CRANERRY CAKE

Some people might complain that this is a very simple recipe. Hey, I’m not claiming it was rocket science discovering this delicious combination. I’m just claiming to have good taste.

Orange Cantaloupe Carrot juice can be made using exactly these three ingredients! It is that simple and straightforward.

Cantaloupe – Get the whole fruit and cut it at home or get the precut/frozen ones. Their high water content helps you stay hydrated.

Carrots – Fresh and tender organic carrots are preferred. Carrots improve the health of the eyes and help build immunity.

Oranges – Navel, Tangerine, Clementine, or Valencia oranges are naturally sweet and are preferred for juicing. You can pick any of them.

They are high in vitamin C, great for good skin, and a healthy immune system. Plus they give an instant energy boost.

Mint leaves and ice cubes are optional.

  3. Recipe for carrot juice:
    • Wash carrots under running water for a couple of minutes. Then cut the ends of both sides and peel off the skin.
    • You can also soak them in water for 30 minutes before. Cut them into one-inch pieces.

Serving Suggestions

When it’s time to serve, add ice cubes to serving glasses and then pour this sugar-free juice. Garnish with mint leaves on top and serve immediately.

You can have one glass for breakfast along with a Bagel Sandwich or serve as a non-alcoholic party drink. This organic energy drink is kid-friendly too!

An alternate way of serving this would be to pour this drink into  and freeze them! They would make perfect summertime treats!

Top Tips, Recommendations, And Suggestions

You can make this organic energy drink in advance and refrigerate it for 4-5 days. But it’s best when served fresh.

Mint leaves lend a certain freshness to the drink but you can skip it if need be. Add fresh basil instead.

There is no need for sugar/honey or salt in this juice but you may add if you feel so.

Add some  or if you like a tangy flavor. Instead of water, you can also use sparkling water or soda. Can add ginger too.

Any other melon would work as a substitute for cantaloupe. Leave the carrot skin on if you want as many of their nutrients are in the skin. They also add more fiber to the juice.

I like to make the 3 juices separately and then mix them together. But if you want, you can mix oranges and cantaloupe together and then prepare the carrot juice separately.

You may or may not sieve this juice. I only sieved the carrot juice. If you do strain the juice, do not throw away the pulp. You can use it in muffins, or smoothies. 5 homemade energy drinks
